This morning was quite chilly in Milton but by the time eight of us had made our way to Paxton Pits Nature Reserve, in the village of Little Paxton, near St Neots, the sun was shining again! Sylvia thinks we have a direct line upstairs to organise good weather! We had arranged a guided tour, led by the lovely Ian, one of the volunteer rangers at the reserve, sponsored by
The Friends of Paxton Pits. We had a picnic lunch sitting outside the visitor centre, right next to an enormous buddleia, where a good number of Peacock butterflies and Blue Damsels were hovering. Then, we set off on our tour, alongside the sailing lake and around the Heronry North and South Lakes, where we saw a spectacular array of birds - cormorants, white egrets, common terns, herons and resplendent wild flowers, showing their true colours in the sun, such as evening primrose. We now know the difference between the call of the blackbird and blackcap and even heard two or three green woodpeckers. Our walk ended with a very welcome cuppa back at the visitor centre, where we found a great second hand book stall and a corner where children's activities were on display. This wonderful reserve is well worth a visit at various times of the year, for further information, please click
